Just for fun ^_^ Irasshaimas Mina-san! Welcome to Sasami Kawaii Anime, my pet homepage for Anime in SA.
So far I've had a lager number of emails of feedback
ranging from SA to even Japan. Arigato every1 !!! ^_~

This site was made for fans to discuss our common hobby, Anime (and Manga).
Since only one or two other similar sites exist in South Africa and searching remote places like Brazil, France and Russia will reveal many more - I felt I needed to add an extra one ^_^!.

In a Cabbit suit ^.^ Dressing up is fun!

Want a really cool Sasami wallpaper? Well get this really cool one here Samy Xmas Wallpaper. Download it now and prove your devotion to our Anime Princess :-).

Pic - no something did not get stuck in my eye! Ayeka, Ryo-ohki and Sasami of course (who else?).
Why did I build this site?

Well, just for fun I guess, actually without reason or rhyme. :) It was meant to be a site for anime fans in SA
and new fans to find info on and also find links where to meet other fans and where to discuss anime. Most of the links are still unavailable,
however you can click one the ones that work. We strongly
also ask you for feedback by joining one of the forums where
anime, manga, Japanese film and other things may be discussed,
actually you can discuss anything you want to hehe........:)

Anime in SA: Do you remember Robotech? Well that's an anime show from the 80's. Heidi, The Dog of Flanders, The Mysterious Cities of Gold, The Green Forest, The Animated Bible, Swiss Family Robinson aka Flone's Island, Sherlock Hounds are all anime shows the SABC used to show, mostly for children. DSTV did run and currently still runs anime movies at midnight on Sci-fi Channel - usually for 16up audiences.

More upcoming Anime Titles:

Kane Karo (His and Her's Circumstance), Armitage III Dual Matrix, Sen No Chihiro (Spirited Away) and Fancy Lala. Reviews of these items should be up before the end of July 02.

Who is this Sasami? You mean you don't know?

Actually how could you hehe..... Sasami Jurai is a character I chose to represent this site. She's a little anime girl character from an Anime show called Tenchi Muyo. Actually Sasami is a very funny character, sometimes michievous but always helpful and just about always smiling and happy. See more on the Tenchi Muyo pages.

Some DVDs worth considering:

Metropolis by Tarô Rin, based on the 1949 manga of Osamu Tezuka, makes for a great DVD buy and watch by yourself or preferably with friends.

Mimi wo Sumaseba on DVD (at last!) aka Whispers of the Heart or If You Listen Closely. A really mellow film about everyday life by Hayao Miyazaki.

Adrenalin Drive by Shinobu Yaguchi is a totally hillarious live action Japanese comedy about a guy and a girl who get the chance to make away with some gangster money, that is if the halfwit punk gangsters don't catch em first. Very Funny!

Still confused what this page is about?

What's the big deal about Anime?

Well, anime is very different from most commercial animation found in the world. Most animation is directed at children and hence portrays things acceptable to them. Anime is different because the Japanese view anime as a medium and not a genre. In the west shows like The Simpsons and South Park are the only type of animation for adults and although excellent they portray satire and basically scoff at human society. This is all fine but why can't shows like The Matrix or War of the Roses ever be animated and shown as such.

Well, in Japan they are. Animation there stems from the country's love of comics and well from it's rich history and theatre (Noh and Kabuki). So there animation is not merely seen as 'for kids' or as a medium to convey satire (although a lot does). Funny thing I mentioned the Matrix, since the Matrix was based on anime shows, Akira and Ghost In the Shell to be exact. By the way if you find that you enjoyed the Matrix a great deal you may consider watching these movies and an excellent 13 part series dubbed into English by Pioneer called Serial Experiments Lain.

Throughout the west a misconception exists that Anime is porn. No such thing. Whereas there is porno-graphic and even quite sad-istic hen-tai (see below) out there, this makes up a small percentage of the market and is strictly
demarcated for the adult 18+ market. Most anime shows bear a 13+ age restriction as does much of adult daytime television. A psychopath thriller may bear a 17+ restriction due to violence but there are very few ultra violent shows out there. Most anime although littered with explosions and flying craft and huge machines in megalithic futuristic cities contains very little blood and death. Likewise there is hardly mention of sex in most shows since this is taboo in the East.

Since Anime is a medium shows for all ages and walks of life exist. Some shows are aimed at school kids, others at teenagers, yet others at college age students and some at even older adults.

The Hyperkinetic Style of anime : Yes anime is very fast moving in general. Some is quite slapstic and some well quite hillarious. Some shows make fun of everything conceivable including Microsoft, Apple and other anime shows. Some even poke fun at the west.

Why the big eyes?

Big eyes are kawaii......hehe.......that means cute. Seriously the Japanese adopted this style in the early post war days from emulating Disney in the US. Now most shows contain big eyed girls and big eyed children and even big eyed animals. Some men are also drawn big eyed. (Not all shows have large eyed
characters.) Large eyes denote the openness of the characters soul to the viewer and others. Good characters usually have large eyes and so do most young characters (as they are the most honest usually). Evil characters do not look cute or large eyed at all.
Then again large eyes are cute so why not (see the picture below)?

Sister Princess
Sister Princess: the brown thing on the left is a huge teddy bear,
this show is a lot like Chobits and Kanon.
See the complete gallery here it's full of endearing characters.

A short description of some of the terms in Anime and anime genres

What is Anime: Anime is animation produced in Japan.
Typically this type of animation features characters who have large Donald Duck like eyes and small mouths.

What is manga: Manga are Japanese comics. 'Nuff said.

What is hen*ai (or ec-chi anime)?
This is deviant anime po$rn, suffice to say.
You will not find any on this site hehe.

What is shounen Anime:
Anime for boys of all ages, typically teenagers but of all ages - boys of 80 too. This anime typically involves seeing the world from a man's viewpoint, ie plenty of action, lots of fast cars and of course women who just throw themselves at
the main character who happens to be a wimp. Ok nooo, it's not
like that. Anime for guys tends to be more action packed, contains
many hot babes and pretty girls and there is lots of violence although
not always.
In Tenchi Muyo, one loser character becomes the object of affection
of 7 women, in Love Hina it is about 10 while in Saber Marionette it is
3 but the girls are marionettes - althought they are just as human as any
of the other shows' characters.
Some of these shows are very cross sectional and people of both sexes tend to enjoy them take Macross, Martian Successor Nadesico
and Sakura Wars. The last 3 are dominated by both giant robots and
especially Nadesico by bickering arguing crews which includes almost a When Harry Met Sally set up. Other shows: Ah My Goddess, Hand Maid May, Moldiver and Mamotte
Shugogetten.

What is Shoujo Anime?
This is anime for girls and women (mostly targetted at
teenagers) of all ages. Typically the stories are very emotional and
character driven. The character development is also very good and
well some shows are very deep and thought provoking. The worse
ones can be lightened to soap operas while the better to Casablanca
and Gone With The Wind. There is less violence in these shows,
although some contain plenty of action eg. Marriage, Fushigi Yugi, Magic Knights Rayearth, Please Save My Earth, Vision of Escaflowne, Yesterday Once Again, Whispers of The Heart, Ocean Waves, To Heart, Saint Seya and Shamanic Princess. In some shows there is less  emphasis on romance and more on comedy - the best example is Jubei-Chan The Ninja Girl which is very hillarious.

What does Baka mean? Baka means 'fool' or 'stupid'. It is something that Ruri-ruri says in the anime Martian Successor Nadesico.

Sci-Fi/New Age: Broad audience shows for everyone who likes the genre: Key The Metal Idol, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in The Shell, Armitage III, Gasaraki, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Patlabor and many others. Some are intended for mature viewers. Other excellent Shows: Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Burn Up W.

Suspense : Perfect Blue and in some respects Key and Lain are excellent examples of Suspense shows.

Magical Girl: aka Mahou Shoujo shows are shows made for
school age girls where typically the heroine is a similar girl who
has magical powers bestowed upon herself. The powers are used
when she transforms her clothes and hair, shoes etc into the magical form and are used to fight evil. The girl(s) usually first tries to
change the evil from within with acts of goodwill however if this does not work she resorts to magic and physical aggression :).
Some shows are very hillarious, and most magical girl shows
albeit may contain emotional moments usually have happy endings
unlike some other anime. Examples: Pretty Samy, Cardcaptor Sakura,
Creamy Miami, Akazukin Cha-cha, Princess Nine, Pretty Soldiers Sailor Moon, Mysterious Thief Saint Tail, Minky Momo and Magic User's Club.

Takahata, Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki: Takahata and Miyazaki are
two of the most talented anime producers in Japan. Their works
are loved the world over and vary in terms of audience, however they
are all excellent. Some are tragic anti war masterpieces (Grave of the Fireflies) while others are stories meant to uplift (Kiki's Delivery Service) while yet others teach valuable lessons (Princess Mononoke).
Other excellent examples: I Can Hear the Sea, Castle of Cagliarito, Whispers of the Heart, Porco Rosso, Only Yesterday (very sentimental), My Neighbour Totoro and Laputa : Castle in the Sky.

Cardcaptor Sakura cast
Sakura (ten year old magical girl heroine), Tomoyo (dark hair) and Kero (the yellow flying beast thingy) from Cardcaptor Sakura (CLAMP). I'll have a review later. You can see a gallery here. Don't ask me how they took this pic, obviously Touya (Sakura's idiot brother) climbed a tree. ^_^
If I'd have to pick a younger sister, Sakura (after Sasami) would be the one, Kero can go to h.... Hehe ^.~

l
Typical of anime is the style of drawing:
Namely characters with very large eyes.
Since eyes are the windows to the soul
typically the more open the character to scrutiny (the more
honest and innocent) the larger the eyes. When possessed
by evil the character's eyes generally become smaller.

Sex appeal is a big thing in anime and although
most anime contains the occasional allusion or
mention of sex, bikini and beach shots are aplenty.
Please see my Anime Beach Bikini Girls Gallery  for more....:).

Cast of Magic User's Club - Mahou Tsukai Tai. Nanaka, Sae and Aikane. See our review section. 19 Episodes of sweet fun!

Mirai - the lead character from Moldiver (a superman like superhero she becomes to fight threats). Better than Superman? You bet :). The costume is a killer.

Typical drawing style in shoujo (girls') anime. This is a manga excerpt.) This guy's gonna get hell from his tree sitting girlfriend.

Saber Marionette J - Lime, Otaru, Bloodberry and
Cherry (L to R). These girls are just cool.

Scene from Noir, one of the hottest shows right now, one
of the two main leads. Reminds me so much of Ayanami Rei.

Another scene from Noir, the other lead. She's pretty hot, hehe.

Agent Aika and the gang.

If some sections are neglected it's because I am too lazy to update them.

Detailed reviews of shows will follow soon.......:)
