Da gang.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
-Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon is the story of a group of high
school girls who fight evil.
It's a magical girl (mahou shoujo) shoujo (girl's) anime
originally targeted at the 8-14 age group in Japan.
However in the past decade this show acquired many fans of all
ages around the world (especially the US) and
ultimately became syndicated to TV stations around the globe in
various dubbed forms of which Sailor Moon in the US
became rather despised for it's poor dub.
Nethertheless Sailor Moon thrilled teenagers and grade schoolers
the world over from Russia, China, US to Europe.
It has also won a cross gender appeal as well as an older
audience - not only from the fact that the millions of girls who
loved it
as children have now grown up and are attending
college/university/working but also through numerous new fans among
grade/high/college students and older people everywhere. It is a
classic!
Who is Sailor Moon?
Sailor Moon like the scouts originally originated from another
world and since this is a romance/comedy/drama/fantasy show
this seems to bring across the fantasy part quite well. They
originate from a "Moon Kingdom" and are constantly
fighting the
evil of the Negaverse. So intense is the struggle that in one
part of the 250+ episode series some of the Sailor Scouts
actually
die - but are revived in a following episode. Sailor Moon aka
Usagi or Serena (English) is the leader. Usagi herself is a
rather
clumsy ditzy (so called 'meatball head' character) who routinely
misses group studying to stalk guys especially her
college aged boyfriend - Darien.
Who is everyone?
Well everyone basically has two sets of names - the original
Japanese (as in Usagi for Sailor Moon aka Serena)
and the English names - Serena or Princess Serenity - Moon
Princess - Sailor Moon.
Minako - Venus, Rei - Mars, Ami - Mercury, Makoto - Jupiter,
Chibi-usa - Reeny / Rini (Usagi's daughter from the future) etc.
There is also one male lead called Tuxedo Mask in the US version.
With progression of the series additional characters are
added namely Sailor Saturn, Chibi-chibi and others. There are
also two cats - Luna and Artemis which assist the gang do
what they do best ..... gawk and drool over guys.....er I mean
fight evil.....yes that's it.........fight evil ^_^'.
The cast acquires special powers by uttering a spell and
transforming into their superhuman selves.
Who is my favourite scout?
It has to be Venus (Minako) (the blonde with the
attitude and a dose of healthy competition with Usagi) followed
by Usagi,
Ami (the kindhearted bookworm) and Chibi-usa (says the darnest of
things about her 'fat' mother -- ie. Usagi etc).
The others are
nice too :).
Would you want your daughter/son to watch Sailor Moon?
Yes. The show is very good, it teaches many life lessons, about
friendship, kindness to others, love (all sorts not just
romance),
perseverence and the value of academic work (the cast study a
lot!). Sailor Moon also has the action, emotion (plenty of
romance),
sometimes immense tragedy, self sacrifice and a loooot of comedy to keep anyone happy - even
me :). Sure it's not the most awe inspiring of shows and it doesn't require a literary mind to comprehend but it does have
its unquestionably good moments.
The character development is superb. If you are a parent Sailor Moon
would make a better alternative to the violent garbage on current
TV and also many other animes too.
Any reservations?
SM cannot be compared to Pokemon, Digimon or other similarly produced rubbish for kids.
Sailor Moon is a classic which stands with Kimba The White Lion and Akira and every otaku should see at least
one episode of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. It will find appeal
with both
male and female audiences alike - and the humour is unique.
