Sasami Kawaii Anime Looks at Armitage III

You've entered the mad world of Sasami Kawaii Anime.

Armitage III
Genre: Suspense/Sci-fi/Action/Drama
Age Rating: 16+ (violence, profane language, occasional nudity).
Studio: Pioneer LDC and AIC (also: Tenchi Muyo, Hand Maid May, Moldiver, others...).

The year is 2046, the place is Mars (a futuristic megalithic city, a bit like in Total Recall), a mysterious killer is brutally killing off Thirds,
or Third Generation cyborgs, robots so human it's impossible to tell them apart from the real thing.

The two main characters of this four part OVA series (later joined to form a movie) are Ross Silabus a cop from Earth who struggles to reconcile his feelings for the death of his partner and Naomi Armitage a mysterious, femme fatale, perky yet hardcore Martian cop.

Setting: Mars is home to a small population of female robots, some of whom have been developed into almost human Thirds. The Thirds are now being killed off one by one by a psychopathic madman called Jean Claude (not Van Damme, sorry).
The usual robots on Mars are mostly female and some are used for less than family friendly reasons. However, since Earth is ruled by
a feministic pro-human movement the former military robot and recreational robot contracts are now to be terminated and swept
under the carpet. A new political era dawns on Mars.

Characters: The two main characters compliment each other and although Armitage doesn't trust Ross in the beginning she later has to and real feelings develop between the two, that is if they can make it though the series/movie alive. Armitage is very much like
Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo and even more like Alita from Battle Angel Alita. She however lacks the naivete of Alita, she's much
more street-smart.

"If humans don't want me, why did they create me?"
This anime delivers on philosophy. What is it to be human? What is humanity? Prejudice and contempt for robots and other issues fall under the spotlight.

Action:
Plenty of it. Expect chases, massive shoot outs with a serial killer, robots, giant machines and much more.

Mystery: Plenty of it and suspense too.

Available as: DVD/VHS/LD in two versions - Polymatrix movie with Kiether Sutherland doing Ross Sylabus' voice in English
(This version combines all 4 OVAs but it is shorter in total than the seperate episdodes). The seperate episode version is available
also on DVD/VHS/LD but only from Japan. See list of retailers for places to acquire this great title.

I first saw Armitage III on Sci-fi channel some years back (1998). The series really appealed to me. The visuals are excellent
the story line full of mystery and suspense and the characterisation unquestionably well chosen. A Five out of Five stars for this one.
